UPS and Teamsters Agree to New Six Year Contract
July 16, 2002

After many months and a marathon negotiating session last weekend, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) has reached a new six-year agreement with United Parcel Service (UPS). The current agreement is scheduled to expire on July 31, 2002.

The new agreement will be sent out to the members of the IBT for ratification. IBT officials are recommending that all members accept the new agreement, and anticipate it will be ratified by the middle of August. This new agreement all but insures that there will be no disruption in service with UPS for the summer shipping season, including back-to-school products.

UPS had stated that some business had been diverted away to their competitors over the last few months, but industry experts anticipate much of this business to return to UPS soon.

A good lesson to learn from this experience is to not put all your eggs in one basket. Diversification of service providers is not always a bad business idea. Some experts indicate that putting all your business with one company will give you greater negotiating leverage with the vendor, but doing so can seriously put your business at risk if something happens causing that vendor to be unable to meet their service requirements to your business.
